THE GUPPY FRIEND: FISHES OUT MICRO PLASTIC, NOT FISH
Everyone who ever had a fish tank knows them: Guppies, tiny, pretty fish who live a full life in the pool- in the sea though, they die of micro plastic and with them many other creatures.
This so called micro plastic on one hand emerges from the corrosion of plastic waste in the ocean, on the other hand simply by washing your fleece sweater in the washing machine!
Because of that problem, the guppy friend was developped.
Not only fleece sweaters seculde many fibers during washing, also outdoor clothing, high tech running shirts, functional clothing, simply all weaves or knits made of polyester, acrylic or nylon. The pollution is enormous. A city of the size of Berlin daily produces on amount of micro plastic that equals 540.000 plastic bags.
During washing „broken synthetic fibres that cannot be filtered out of washing machines or a purification plant go down the drain. These so-called micro plastic particles reach rivers and oceans and embed toxins. They end up in the food chain and cause severe disease for humans and animals.“
But now there is guppy friend!
The wash bag filters out 99% of the harmful fibres. You put the synthetic garments into the bag before washing, after, you remove the clean clothes and dispose of the secluded fibres with the other plastic waste.
The start-up was founded by LANGBRETT, a group of surfers, skaters and creatives who teamed up in order to develop sustainable surf and outdoor clothing.
The crowdfunding was completed successfully, the first order produced. From appr. April 2017 the guppies can be ordered again, we’ll keep you posted on this.
Moreover, they work on developping a filter for washing machines and purification plants. Until then, you can help using a guppy bag-keep your ocean clean- use a guppy friend.
For those of you who want to get information on the other topic that causes microplastic, plastic waste islands in the ocean that is, check out this: A young Dutch came up with the idea of a filter system that collects the waste with the actual help of the current. The idea is now being examined by scientists and engineers: https://www.theoceancleanup.com/
FANCY WOOD PRODUCTS THAT DON’T HARM FORESTS- FOUND AT THE BOOTH OF EXACALLO
A good example of the combination of expertise, vision and intelligent application of natural ressources is EXALLO.
Brothers Leonidas and Charalampos brought their father’s carpentry to a new level by establishing the production of innovative products. Set up with the necessary skills, old „family recipes“ and the right dosis of zeitgeist business sense, they now craft exquisite cuff links, phone shells and bow ties.
Since the products are small in size, they benefit from being able to utilising fine woods leftovers, sheer driftwood and further precious material from the nearby woods. The EXALLO studio is located in the middle of beautiful nature, with a view on mount olympus. In such a setting, inspiration is all around so we can be sure, that the guys won’t run out of ideas any time soon.
COFFEE DOESN’T NECESSARILY MEAN BEAN- SELOSODA TEACHES US THAT THE FRUIT IS JUST AS DELICIOUS
More and more products emerge from the innovative usage of former by-product of a natural resource. So at the SELOSODA booth I was suprised by a beverage that is based on old Jemeni drinking culture. It’s not the bean, it’s the coffee fruit- that part of the plant that so far hasn’t been used. Now available are two kinds of sodas that hold the caffeine content of two espressi, that are unsweetened and on top merely have any content of natural sugars. I tried both varieties and found them delicious! It doesn’t have anything to do with the classic coffee taste anymore, maybe only a certain intensity in the aftertaste reminds a little bit of mocca. Probably too harsh for the fans of regular soda; for all the others who are curious of trying new, healthy beverages, definitely an enrichment!
Check out cocktail recipes on their facebook page (a great alternative to the artificially sweet and chemically tasting energy drinks by the way):
Looks like the „skinny bitch“ got some competition 😉
Where can you buy selosoda? On their online shop and at Getränke Hoffmann’s in Berlin. More POS to come hopefully soon.
I alomost forgot to mention the tea (to brew) made of coffee fruit, it’s also very delicious and you can order it on their site.
BAG DOESN’T NECESSARILY MEAN LEATHER- MARAVILLAS BAGS SHOW US HOW
And yet another darling from the Ethical Fashion Show: Vegan bags made of pineapple leather, yes right! Again a premium product that emerged from a former by-product, the prettiest part of the fruit that is, the „crown“! The fibres are super resistant, similar to hemp or linen. But the innovative material, that so far is only produced by one supplier, is hard to get: Too much demand! All the better for Maravillas who, besides their convincing design, stand out with a rare material innovation.
We do hope though, that in the near future, the material can be produced for a wide range of products. Regarding the immense pineapple production world wide, this would be a great contribution to a positive life cycle assessment.
In the best case, soon enough, we’ll be content to know that, when eating Toast Hawaii, the rest of the precious fruit is well taken care of.
